Born 1960 USA
When I was a young girl I was given a box from China that seemed to have no lid
or opening. I turned the box over and over, looking for a way to get into it,
growing ever more curious about what was inside. Finally I discovered that by
sliding a wooden panel I could reach hidden drawers and cavities. In many ways
this is a description of my relationship with China – only after many years
of effort have I been modestly successfull in discovering a few of its many secrets.
I started taking pictures in 1984 by documenting mental health care in Sweden,
a project that led to an exhibition and a book. The following year I made my first
trip to China, and since then have photographed all of the country's provinces.
I never tire of going back and always look forward to continuing my photography
of this enormous country, its culture and people.
